For categories where new and second-hand are practically identical (furniture, books, electronics, kids' gear that's barely used), choosing pre-owned is the easiest planet-positive choice you can make.
We're not the answer to every disposal question — and pretending we are would waste your time. Here's our honest take on when other options are better:
Donating to charity: If the item has low resale value but is still in good condition (everyday adult clothes, books, kitchenware), donating to Oxfam Ireland, SVP, or your local charity shop supports a cause AND keeps the item out of landfill.
Textile recycling: For clothes that are worn out, torn or stained beyond resale, use a textile bring-bank. Find your nearest at mywaste.ie — there are over 1,500 collection points across Ireland.
Schuh's shoe takeback / store schemes: For shoes specifically, some retailers run takeback programmes — check with the original retailer before assuming the bin is the only option.
Sellinn works best when the item has value to another buyer. If it doesn't, one of the routes above is the right call — and it's still better than the bin.
